Companions of the Night - Book Review

My first introduction to fantasy and vampires was a book called, Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde. I found it in the library of my middle school. I checked it out and read it. I was hooked. I returned it... and checked it out about a million times after. Right before school ended, the librarian said I was the only person who had checked that book out that year, though to be fair it may have been because I never allowed it to be on the shelves long enough for anyone else to get to it... because of that, she discontinued it from the library and let me have it. I'm not sure if she was allowed to, or if she just planned to buy another copy since I was ALWAYS in the library and we talked about books non-stop, but that is how I ended up with one of my copies, which I own still too this day.

Vivian Vande Velde is one of my FAVORITE authors. She writes a large range of stories for a large range of ages and I have read and I own all of them. Though Companions of the Night is not my favorite of hers, it still has a spot in my heart as it's what opened the world of fantasy to me.

So! What is it about for those of you who don't know? Well let me tell you all about it.

The story follows Kerry, a six-teen year old girl who leaves her little brother's teddy bear at the laundromat and has to go out in the night to get it back. Once there, she runs into people who have kidnapped a boy who appears to be close to her age. Unknown to her... the boy is a vampire.

The story is pretty predictable, which doesn't mean it didn't shock me when it first came out, remember this was my first taste of fantasy. To this day though, the story still holds up. I still read it and fall in love with the characters. I still hope that everything goes well for them. I still want very much to see a happy ending for the good guys.

Even many, many years later it is one of my favorite books. Not my favorite by Vivian Vande Velde anymore though, I read one several years later that I loved more! Perhaps one day I will tell you about that one.

Until then, what is your favorite novel? What was your first taste of fantasy? Let me know in the comments below! And if you like vampires, check out Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde.
